Things To Know About The Customs and Practices Associated with Thanksgiving

In the United States, Thanksgiving Day is regarded as a federal holiday, and the day after Thanksgiving, November 24, 2022, will fall on that date. One of the earliest Thanksgiving festivities in what would become the United States was held at Plymouth in 1621 and included both European colonists and Wampanoag people. Today, this event is considered to be one of the earliest Thanksgiving celebrations with in colonies. Over the course of more than 200 years, several colonies and nations observed days designated specifically for giving thanks. In the midst of the American Civil War in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made a proclamation that established the national holiday of Thanksgiving as the fourth Thursday of every November.

The Customs and Practices Associated with Thanksgiving

The celebration of Thanksgiving in many homes across the United States no longer places a significant emphasis on the religious aspects of the holiday's origins. Instead, the holiday is concentrated on the preparation of a hearty dinner and its enjoyment with loved ones. There is some debate as to whether or not the Pilgrims served turkey during the first Thanksgiving feast, which took place in 1621. Turkey is such a Thanksgiving mainstay that it has practically come to be associated with the festival.

Stuffing, casseroles, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie are some of the other typical meals served at Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving Day, many people give back to their communities by volunteering their time, and many communities also arrange food drives and provide free dinners for those who are less fortunate.
